FIXED: Playstation Remote App for Windows crashes after 30 seconds

- by

I’ve been using the Playstation Remote App for PC for years to play both PS4 and PS5 games on my Laptop and/or Desktop. It’s a super convenient way to play even though the console might be in another room. I’ve never had problems with it, until the recent update v9.0.0.2120, which introduced a serious issue: although it connects, the app crashes after 30 seconds without fail. It properly sucks.

This version was introduced in late March 2026 by Sony as a “force upgrade”, meaning you can’t easily go back to an older version. At the time of writing it has been nearly 4 weeks and Sony has not released a patch yet that rectifies the problem.

Thankfully there is a third-party hack we can use to remedy the issue:

  • we install the latest version 9.x as instructed by the app (it auto updates)
  • we login with out credentials
  • now we UNINSTALL the app (via the Windows “add/remove” feature)
  • we download an older Remote Play v8.x from Uptodown: https://ps5-remote-play.en.uptodown.com/windows
  • install that older version, but DO NOT START IT yet
  • now we download and install this patch: https://github.com/xeropresence/remoteplay-version-patcher (run the EXE)
  • and now we can start the latest Remote Play app and it’ll use the older binaries under the hood

This trick works because newer Remote Plat app is satisfied that we’ve updated, but it’s using older binaries that do not cause the crash after less than a minute. Woohoo!

We can only guess what Sony has implemented there as additional check, which may or may not be related to the upcoming console exclusive of GTA 6. I’m sure eventually it’ll get fixed for PC users. Know that remote connections from other hardware like other Playstation consoles or the Portal remote player do not seem to be affected.

Thanks to xeropresence and FeePrize for this fix!
