Catch The WP Guru Podcast where Complex Stuff gets made extremely simple. These are audio versions of my screencasts on a variety of tech topics, such as WordPress, Dreamweaver, web based services and a lot of other super complicated stuff.

I have several other podcasts too, check them out here.

Creating a Podcast Feed with WordPress and PowerPress – Part 1

In this episode I’ll show you how to add podcasting capabilities to your WordPress website, using the Blubrry PowerPress plugin. I’ll explain the concepts and inner workings of a Podcast Feed, how it can be read by podcast directors and readers alike, and talk you through the installation of the plugin.

For this example, I will setup Category Podcasting on my website https://supersurvivor.tv, which will allow me to host more than one Podcast Feed from the site.

How to remove the Jetpack Feedback Tab

In this episode I’ll explain how we can hide the Feedback Tab that the Jetpack plugin adds to the sidebar of the admin interface in WordPress. This tab is part of the Contact Form feature, which sadly cannot be switched off with a single slider. We’ll have to delve into debug mode and do it “the hard way” – but fear not, there’s not code hacking involved, and I’ll be with you every step of the way.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

How to hide WordPress Update Notifications with ZEN DASH

In this episode I’ll show you how to hide and remove those (almost daily occurring) WordPress Update Notifications. I’ve built this functionality into a plugin I’ve written over 5 years ago called ZEN DASH. The plugin’s main purpose is to hide all kinds of clutter from the WordPress admin interface, such as unused tabs, dashboard widgets, footer attributions – and Update Notifications.

You can install the plugin by searching under Plugins – Add New, or download it from the official WordPress repository here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/zen-dash

The project is also on GitHub: https://github.com/versluis/Zen-Dash

How to bring back the Classic Editor in WordPress 5.x

In this episode I’ll show you how to install the Classic Editor plugin in WordPress 5.x. I’m also showing you how to upgrade to WordPress 5.0 and how to bring back the welcome screen that appears only once after the update.

From now on, Gutenberg will be the new post and page editing experience in WordPress by default. The Classic Editor is now a plugin that will be supported until 2021, so there’s ample time to get acquainted with Gutenberg in our own time.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments.

How to submit your Podcast Feed to Spotify

In this episode I’ll show you how to add your Podcast Feed to Spotify. Until very recently, this was only possible if you were hosting your podcast with a specialist “aggregator service” (also known as podcast hosts), but Spotify have now enabled submissions from the likes of you and me as well. Here’s how to do it.

How to find the URL to your YouTube Playlists

In this episode I’ll show you how to find the URL to your own YouTube Playlists in Creator Studio Classic. At the time of recording, Playlists cannot be accessed or shared from YouTube Studio Beta on a desktop browser. I will also show you how to share a playlist with the YouTube Studio iOS App, in which this feature is implemented.

Blue Yeti vs ZAFFIRO – Microphone Comparison ASIN B07BVRQD8G

I was looking for another desktop USB microphone for my second desk. Currently I’m using a wonderful Blue Yeti with my Mac on my main desk (or Studio A as we like to call it), and every time I do a screencast or podcast on my Windows workstation (or Studio B as we’d like to call it), I have to bring over the Blue Yeti.

So I discovered the ZAFFIRO Desktop USB Mic, for over $100 less. I thought I’d give it a spin – and I really like it. Here’s what I found after a couple of weeks of working with it.

Ruipu Power Bank Review: 24000 mA⋅h with Solar Panels (and how to use it)

Last year, in September 2017, I ordered a RUIPU 24,000 mAh Solar Power Bank in preparation for Hurricane Irma here in Florida. I’ve had a whole year’s worth of experience with this gadget and decided to buy another one.

This thing rocks! Let me tell you all about it, and how to use it in this review.

ZAFFIRO Lapel Microphone comparison B074SF96X9 vs B0765NGK4N

In this episode I’m taking a look at two lapel microphones by ZAFFIRO. They’re both called “Lavalier Lapel Microphone”, and the description is more or less identical on both items – yet there are significant differences between these products.

I bought both of them back in March 2018, and given the sound quality and amount of accessories you get, for less than $20 each, these mics are good bargains for casual users. But no matter how detailed (or vague) their shop descriptions are, and no matter how hip the people in those pictures look, you can only really judge a microphone by what it sounds like.

In this review I’ll tell you all that I’ve learnt in my six months with the ZAFFIRO lapel mics.

WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg: What does this mean for you

In this episode I’m explaining the implications of the new default text editor in WordPress 5.0. It’s called Gutenberg, named after the man who invented the printing press (and hence revolutionised how printed books were duplicated and distributed at the time).

I’ll also show you how to test drive the Gutenberg editor in WordPress 4.9 and earlier, and how to bring back the Classic Editor if Gutenberg is not for you.

I’m not going into details on how to use the new editor, this is just an explanation what Gutenberg means, where the change will happen and how to remedy your WordPress instance if you feel lost with it (like I did when I first tested it last week).
